CONTROLLERS FOR FIXED-WING AIRCRAFT AND GROUND PLATFORMS

Choose a controller for the specific type of fixed-wing aircraft or ground platform. Support for one firmware or configuration does not automatically imply support for others.

First, check that a supported target is available for the exact board model and hardware revision. For ArduPilot, the firmware type also matters: Plane and Rover serve different purposes. The processor name alone does not confirm compatibility with the software you need.

Control outputs and interfaces

Check the number of available servo and ESC outputs, along with the peripheral interfaces. UART, I²C, and CAN are not interchangeable. Having the pins is not enough; the firmware for the specific board must also support the devices.

Check power requirements separately

Controller power and servo power may be separate. Compare the BEC rating with the load on the rail it supplies. Check the board documentation for supported voltages, current limits, and output assignments; a USB connection does not confirm that all peripherals receive power.

Before buying, also compare the dimensions, mounting method, and connector access with the aircraft or vehicle enclosure. A barometer, compass, logging, and other features depend on the installed hardware and firmware support. Do not assume every controller in a series has them.

FAQ

  • Only if the board documentation and support for the required firmware type confirm it. ArduPilot uses Plane for fixed-wing aircraft and Rover for ground platforms. Check the exact controller revision, available outputs, and supported peripherals.

  • Count the independent control channels you need and compare them with the board’s outputs in the intended firmware. Output assignments and supported modes matter, not just the number of connector pins.

  • It depends on the design. The servo rail may have a separate BEC, require an external supply, or be isolated from FC power. Check the power diagram for the specific board; the controller’s regulator rating does not automatically apply to the servos.

  • They may differ in sensors, port layout, memory capacity, and firmware support. ArduPilot builds for some boards also have a limited feature set. Compare the exact specifications and the features available in the firmware version you need.

  • This depends on the model, the functions you need, and the software requirements. Such devices are not always included. Before ordering, check the package contents, sensor support, and available interfaces in the controller documentation.
